Airspace update

I just noticed yesterday that the Class E transponder required airspace near Mission was not showing up on my LK8000 gps vario. I have since fixed the parsing program so that it no longer deletes the transponder required class E spaces from the files "canadian_airspace_noE_below12500.air" and "canad...

Please post your flights!

I'd like to encourage everyone to post their flights on the XContest and WCSC online contests. XContest is international but there is also national contest and national team contests. Be sure to register before you fly because you can't register afterwards and then add a earlier flight. The WCSC con...

Re: Woodside Airspace Reminder

Hi Chiu

Great to hear from you. I hope this means that we will see you out flying again!

I'll try your suggestion. I just need to make sure it doesn't break other stuff in my scripts like the java script generation.

Re: Woodside Airspace Reminder

For those of you flying with instruments that show you airspace, I've recently been generating some additional files that are easier to look at. I like to use either "Tim Newport-Peace format below 12500' with Class E removed" or "OpenAir format below 12500' with Class E removed with fractional seco...

Looks like Al Thielmann took advantage of the strong south winds and flew a crazy tiger line through the depths of the Coast Mountains to Pemberton. Crazy man!!

BC XC League 2016 is up and running

Post all your flights in BC at http://www.westcoastsoaringclub.com/comps/ and compete for cash and glory. This competition is different from all the other online XC completions because we offer handicaps for experience and for gliders. A low hours pilot doing short XC's with a school glider can scor...

Correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that the SLRD is not the owner of the field. The school board is. The SLRD has negotiated with the school board for access to the field for a number of user groups. Continued access to this field is very important to the SLRD because it is the only fie...

Yes Tobi, the field in that photo marked Alternate LZ is correct. You will find that it is a bit smaller than what is shown since there is only a portion of it that has been mowed. The grass in the other sections is reported to be head high.

Martin, the 7m error has nothing to do with the GPS. It is the absolute pressure measured by my instrument with the CYXX altitude setting applied. I have my instrument setup to automatically guess the altitude setting one time only at the start of the flight based on a GPS fix. This only affects the...

Martin, just to clarify, the IGC file contains the standard atmosphere altitude. It does not include any QNH adjustments. It does rely on the instruments absolute pressure calibration which could be way off. But using my instrument and the CYXX altitude setting I was 7m too high when I landed. Prett...

Whoa seems I touched a nerve here. Excellent, this forum has been a bit boring since Blackbox left. I have always advocated that airspace infringements should be given a pass if the pilot shows clear intent to avoid the airspace (ie they stopped turning some time before). The problem is we have to d...

Airspace checker upgrade

I was dismayed to see that the airspace checker ( http://www3.telus.net/cschwab/viewer/check_airspace.html ) busted me for my flight on Sunday. I got really close but according to the altitude I was watching on my vario, I was fine. The problem was the airspace checker was looking at the gps altitud...

New Windgrams

I have updated the HRDPS windgram plots and put them on a new page at canadarasp.com. There are now two day images and more information in strip plots at the top. The link is http://www.canadarasp.com/windgrams . It is very easy to add additional points anywhere in the area shown here http://weather...

I notice that I failed to mention why the Minimum Enroute Altitude (MEA) is important.

Airways and RNAV routes are class E below 12500' or below the MEA, whichever is higher. They are class B above.

Airspace updates

I have updated my airspace viewer ( http://www3.telus.net/cschwab/viewer/canadian_airspace.html ) and checker ( http://www3.telus.net/cschwab/viewer/check_airspace.html ). The changes are: 1. Added the fixed RNAV routes. Previously I had ignored them thinking that they are "air routes" and therefore...
