El Nido Fly-in Clearwater BC, Aug 11-13 2017

Post by Claudia »

Hello fellow pilots,

The El Nido Fly-in at Clearwater BC is happening again from Friday 11th till Sunday 13th of August 2017.

The site is located in the beautiful North Thompson valley 130 km North from Kamloops.
This is a relaxed get together flying weekend with a focus on fun and safe flying.
A great site for long thermo - dynamic flights along / above the 10 km long ridge.
Very favorable for hang gliders as well. ( good steep TO and humongous landing field.)
Para gliders and Hang gliders welcome.
Often the ceiling sits around 3000 m in August with lots of pilots flying 30 km triangles or local XC. The potential is to fly big XC if you follow the hwy 5 North towards Blue River (90 km) or Valemount (165 km) Who is going to be the first one to open this route?

Well, some routes have been opened in the last few years.
The Kamloops – Barriere route (52 km) flown by Terry Butcher in Summer 2014.
The Barriere – Clearwater route (55 km) as well as the Clearwater – Blue River route (92 km) flown by Scott Watwood in May 2017.
Peter Spear holds the local triangle record of 42 km (August 2016).
All impressive flights and all on Paragliders. (hanglider pilots have work to do!)

YouTube :
Watch Terry Butcher’s you tube video ‘El Nido Clearwater BC ‘if you want to get a good image of the site and how to catch the house thermal up.

When : Friday 11, Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 of August 2017
Where : Clearwater BC

Directions to LZ : From the info center in Clearwater take the HWY 5 North (direction Jasper) for 12 Km – 8 min. Take a right @ Birch Island Lost Creek Road and follow the road (500m) down to ‘Dee’s General store”. Look for happy people.

Camping : From the Wells Grey info center in Clearwater, drive 10.5 km North on Hwy 5. Look for a big yellow sign that says ' Birch Island campground'  It's a great campground for tenting and RV's with full hook ups.  This camping is at walking distance from the LZ which is right across the grocery store / liquor store / gas station at Birch Island.
OR
KOA campground in downtown Clearwater.
OR
Free camping around my house @ 1088 Bohill Place Clearwater BC exclusively for the ‘ El Nido Fly In weekend’! No Showers, NO hook up’s but great campfire place where we can get together and tell stories....perhaps with a beer. Bring your own!!!

Take off :                4 gliders can set up at once, nice grassy gentle slope located in a wide cut block
Directions to TO :        From LZ drive back up to HWY 5. Drive North (direction Jasper). After 4 km take a left onto a gravel road (Mc Corvy Lakes FSR) Stay on this main gravel road for 6.5 km and ignore the small junctions. At 6.5 km look for a windsock in the trees on your left side.
